Environmental measurements are essential for businesses in all sectors to understand their impact on the world around them, ensuring they operate responsibly and in line with local laws. This is especially important in Egypt, where rapid industrial growth and urbanization have made monitoring pollution and environmental health a key concern.

These measurements cover a variety of factors, from air quality to noise levels to temperature, helping businesses stay on top of their environmental footprint. Regular monitoring isn’t just about complying with regulations—it’s also about making sure operations don’t harm public health or the environment. In Egypt, businesses must adhere to several crucial environmental laws. The Environmental Protection Law No. 4 of 1994, along with its amendment in Law No. 9 of 2009, sets the framework for pollution control and environmental protection. Further regulations, including Prime Minister’s Decision No. 338 of 1995, outline specific requirements businesses must follow.

There’s also the Irrigation and Protection of the Nile River and Waterways Law No. 48 of 1983, ensuring that industries don’t pollute the country’s most important water resources. Pollution is a serious issue in urban areas, particularly in Cairo. In 2023, Egypt exceeded the WHO annual air quality guideline value by 8.5 times. This is a powerful reminder of why environmental measurements are so important. Monitoring air quality differs from outdoor to indoor areas, by regularly measuring pollutants like particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), stack emissions, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), businesses can identify and mitigate harmful emissions that contribute to poor air quality and health problems.

How often should measurements be done? For large-scale industrial facilities, regular monitoring is a must, often every three months, six months, or annually, to ensure ongoing compliance and to spot any issues early. Buildings and smaller facilities might be monitored less frequently but they still need to track key factors like air quality, noise pollution, and indoor temperature to protect the health and safety of workers and the surrounding community. For example, industries need to focus on measuring pollutants like PM2.5, which can deeply affect the lungs, and gases like ozone (O₃) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), which are major contributors to smog and respiratory problems. Noise pollution and heat stress also need to be carefully monitored, particularly in work environments, using indicators like wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) to ensure that conditions remain safe.

Environmental measurements do more than just keep businesses compliant with local laws—by regularly assessing environmental conditions, companies can make adjustments that lower their environmental impact, save on energy, and cut unnecessary costs, all while improving sustainability efforts.
